Key elements of the user-friendly, GFDL SKYHI general circulation model
نویسنده
چکیده
Over the past seven years, the portability of the GFDL SKYHI general circulation model has greatly increased. Modifications to the source code have allowed SKYHI to be run on the GFDL Cray Research PVP machines, the TMC CM-5 machine at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and more recently on the GFDL 40-processor Cray Research T3E system. At the same time, changes have been made to the model to make it more usable and flexible. Because of the reduction of the human resources available to manage and analyze scientific experiments, it is no longer acceptable to consider only the optimization of computer resources when producing a research code; one must also consider the availability and cost of the people necessary to maintain, modify and use the model as an investigative tool, and include these factors in defining the form of the model code. The new SKYHI model attempts to strike a balance between the optimization of the use of machine resources (CPU time, memory, disc) and the optimal use of human resources (ability to understand code, ability to modify code, ability to perturb code to do experiments, ability to run code on different platforms). Two of the key features that make the new SKYHI code more usable and flexible are the archiving package and the user variable block. The archiving package is used to manage the writing of all archive files, which contain data for later analysis. The model-supplied user variable block allows the easy inclusion of any new variables needed for particular experiments.

Spontaneous Stratospheric QBO-like Oscillations Simulated by the GFDL SKYHI General Circulation Model
The tropical stratospheric mean flow behavior in a series of integrations with high vertical resolution versions of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) ‘‘SKYHI’’ model is examined. At sufficiently high vertical and horizontal model resolution, the simulated stratospheric zonal winds exhibit a strong equatorially centered oscillation with downward propagation of the wind reversals a...
متن کاملGFDL Ocean General Circulation Model Collaborators
Ocean general circulation models (OGCMs) are important tools for climatological research. These models approximate the solution to the governing equations to predict horizontal velocity components, temperature, salinity, and other chosen parameters. The GFDL OGCM, or Modular Ocean Model (MOM), is an example of such a code. This code was originally developed at the Geophysical Fluids Dynamics La...
متن کاملDo General Circulation Models Underestimate the Natural Variability in the Arctic Climate?
The authors examine the natural variability of the arctic climate system simulated by two very different models: the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) global climate model, and an area-averaged model of the arctic atmosphere–sea ice–upper-ocean system called the polar cap climate model, the PCCM. A 1000-yr integration of the PCCM is performed in which the model is driven by a prescri...

Abstract Introduction: Bioequivalence studies are the most important way of evaluating the quality and efficacy of pharmaceutical formulations. In a bioequivalence study, the rate and extent of drug absorption into the general circulation is measured and the pharmacokinetic parameters should be calculated and statistically evaluated for the reference and test products. Pharmacokinetic paramete...
متن کاملPredictability of the Indian Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies in the GFDL coupled model
[1] We explore the predictability of the sea surface temperature anomalies associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole/Zonal Mode (IODZM) at a three-season lead, within the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) coupled general circulation model (CGCM). In both control simulations and retrospective forecasts of the 1990’s in the CGCM, we find that the occurrence of some IODZM events is precon...
